Block & Brew Cafe
529 E Liberty St, Ann Arbor, MI
Crema's Take
“Block & Brew Cafe is an unconventional spot where specialty matcha drinks steal the show—regulars rave about their salted cream and strawberry versions that are genuinely smooth and creamy rather than chalky. The vibe is quirky and eclectic (complete with a bitcoin theme and board games on hand), making it feel like a creative hangout that takes itself just seriously enough with solid coffee and Vietnamese egg coffee alongside those standout matchas.”

oh my life was just changed. my friend and i each got matchas and shared the bao buns and total came up to around $25. didn't get a picture this time but i may update with one again
Came here on a whim and was very pleasantly surprised! I got a salted cream matcha and it was amazing, smooth, creamy and beautiful! My friend got a strawberry matcha and that was just as wonderful! We also got pork belly bao buns and they were to die for. Fluffy, sweet, spicy and herbaceous, everything you want in a small plate
I came to this place on a whim, and I sadly regret doing so. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted with an upscale vibe with poor execution. I was already turned off by the bitcoin theme, so to see an AI generated mural hanging on their wall and possibly an AI generated animation on their order kiosk did not help at all. I ordered a decaf mocha, and it was a $0.75 upcharge for the decaf. I've been to almost every coffee shop on the block around this place, and this was the only spot that did that kind of upcharge. My total was $9.00 without a tip, by far making this place the most expensive coffee I've paid for. Though the barista was nice, the coffee took a while to get to me, and the coffee left me disappointed and annoyed. I was expecting it to be on the more bitter side due to the description online saying that this place sold Viet coffee, but the coffee was sweet, watery, and tasted like thin chocolate milk. It was like they used drip coffee instead of espresso. I wish my experience was better, but it is what it is. I will not be returning anytime soon. TL;DR - AI art on the walls; extremely sweet and watery coffee; expensive; upcharge for decaf. Not worth it in my opinion.
Stopped in randomly and I'm so glad I did. The coffee was a perfect treat. I don't know the coffee words, but it was tasty and robust without needing to rely on flavors and sweeteners to make it yummy. I also had the pork belly summer rolls and they were outstanding. Everything was fresh and flavorful with just the right amount of heat. The service was prompt and so friendly. My order was to go due to time, but the ambiance was welcoming and comfortable. Great for catching up with friends or zoning out and getting some work done. I felt like it was very affordable for the quality. I'd spend about the same at a chain and the food wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable. I'm so glad I stumbled on this place, I will definitely go back on purpose.
A peculiar vibe to say the least, but the vietnamese egg coffee was great. Seems like a chill place to study, and they also have chess and checkers for a relaxing time. On the expensive side
