Saxbys
4200 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA
Crema's Take
“This Saxbys location on Pitt's campus nails what a college coffee shop should be: a warm, dependable spot where the drinks—especially their creative cold brew variations like the decaf chai cold brew with oat milk—genuinely shine. While the food side has some consistency issues, the fast and friendly service keeps students and visitors coming back for quality specialty drinks in an inviting atmosphere that's perfect for studying or grabbing something quick between classes.”

Stopped by while visiting from Philly/South Jersey. Received the (very!) fast and friendly service and quality I’ve come to expect from Saxby’s, and—for the first time in my life—a cup with my name spelled the right way!
As a long-time Pitt student, I find that this Saxbys stands out among the many food and drink spots on campus. Beyond being a great pick-me-up for studying, it offers a warm and inviting atmosphere despite its high-traffic location. The staff is exceptionally friendly, and both their teas and overall service are excellent—I highly recommend the London Fog!
Wow, some of the worst food I've had in a long time. I ordered a grilled cheese and it initially looked good but it instantly started falling apart and it tasted disgusting. The order also took longer than usual and was poorly communicated. I'm connecting the dots because I remember a disgusting burger from many years ago, and I think this was also from Saxbys (rather than Zaxby's, which is much better). Never getting food from Saxbys again, it's leagues below even McDonald's.
I ordered a grilled cheese and waited for over 50 minutes and watched multiple people order and receive their food before I got mine. I went up and asked about my order several times and was told “it should be up shortly” then they asked me what I ordered and finally made it immediately. I was also handed a card for $5 in “Saxby’s Cash” as an apology for the wait which I tried to use at a different Saxby’s location and was denied due to the card being expired. Overall a very poor experience.
The drinks were the highlight of our visit. My friends got a decaf chai cold brew with oat milk that was delicious and their Mocha cold brew was also pretty tasty and rich. The 'big mood' was underwhelming but then again this is run by college students. The breakfast burritos were delicious, warm, and filling but the avocado toast was severely lacking. It was opening day so they were out of everything but the bagel seasoning which is fine but no one told us they were out when we ordered. Not going lie, I can't believe I paid 5 dollars for ONE slice of wheat toast with some avocado and 2 slices of tomato. Other than that, I'm willing to try some of their other offers(especially the sandwiches which look delicious). Just be weary of the cold matcha drinks and the avo toasts and you can't go wrong with anything. Customer service was great and the atmosphere was nice(probably because it was opening day). I'll probably chalk up the toast mistake to it being the first day(plus the huge menu) but this is a spot you probably want to stop by.
