Montago Coffee

At first glance you wouldnt think that this would be one of the hippest little coffee hubs in Helena, and you would be wrong. Located in the heart of downtown Helena in the former historic home of the original Independant record is a sweet little secret that I didnt know about until today. I know I cant be the only one who thought it was only a brewery. At any rate, what a pleasant surprise to find this little treasure. The atmosphere alone is soooo cute, up-to-date and modern. This place far surpasses its rivals; I think to myself as I sit on a cute chaise lounge with my coffee cohort friend. The barristas, if you want to call them that, I would like to think of them more as caffiene alchemists. They have perfected their magic with beautifully decorated foam art atop of deliciously brewed goodness along side of their smiling outstanding customer service making me want more and more. There are not many sit down coffee shops open on Sundays in Helena MT, oddly enough but I am extremely thankful that this gem popped up as one of the spots open because it was absolutely a comforting and lovely place to have a delicious cup of love. 10 out of 10 would go again.

Great atmosphere and vibe. But the worst coffee I have ever had and the worst matcha I’ve ever had. My husband and I had a honey cinnamon and pistachio latte the first time and it felt like the coffee was extremely watered down and lacking any tasting notes or flavor profiles. We tried the shop a second time and got a matcha over ice, and it was by far the worst we’ve had anywhere. My husband and I make matcha lattes daily at home, and it’s smooth, just good quality matcha, a little bit of honey and milk and it’s great. Good matcha should be smooth. Bad mixing and lack of a natural sweetener will make it taste like grass. And their matcha tasted like grass. Sigh. Really wanted to like this place. Our friends who were in town also both agreed the coffee was extremely weak.

I stopped by Montago Coffee in Helena and tried both the mocha latte and the honey cinnamon latte, and they were perfect. I’m usually really picky with my coffee and tend to avoid anything overly sweet or syrupy, but both of these drinks were incredibly well-balanced with no need for any modifications. Rich flavor, just the right touch of sweetness, and super smooth. You can tell they care about the quality of what they serve. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for something flavorful but not overpowering. I’ll be back for sure!

5 stars don’t even describe this beautiful, full of vibe and great coffee shop! The coffee is amazing, the place itself is full of style and it was pure fun to sit there. We’ll definitely drop by again!

Montago Coffee Co has a lovely aesthetic and a beautiful view such a nice spot to sit and work, though it can get a little noisy at times. I ordered the maple latte based on recommendations, and it was good it cost me $5.50. I was looking for a comfortable spot to sit and ended up moving around a bit. By then, my drink had gotten a little too cold, so next time I’ll be sure to let them know I like it extra hot! They also offer matcha, which I’m definitely going back to try. The overall vibe is great for a casual hangout or a cozy work session with a warm drink.
