Breakaway Cafe

Crema's Take
“Breakaway Cafe is a bustling Chapel Hill favorite where the food legitimately lives up to the hype—think perfectly executed pancakes, omelets, and fresh pastries that keep people coming back despite the crowds. Beyond the impressive breakfast and lunch menu, they're crafting artful specialty drinks like beautifully made matcha lattes and quality coffee drinks, all served in a bright, dog-friendly patio space that's equally great for lingering with a laptop or meeting friends. It's the kind of place that earns its loyal rotation spot through consistent freshness, genuine hospitality, and that rare combination of casual comfort and culinary care.”

I was so reluctant to trying this place because it was always packed but after eating there, now I see why. The food is 10/10. We’ve gotten pancakes, omelettes, pastries, quiches and they’ve all been amazing every time. The matcha was also amazing! The food is high quality and I would say pretty reasonably priced compared to other breakfast places. The service is also top tier, from the cashiers to the service staff, all are always super friendly. It’s a great place to eat on a weekday you’re working remotely or on a weekend with the family… It is the only breakfast place in pittsboro with that much variety of food!
The menu at Breakaway features many healthy and tasty options for both lunch and dinner. It's a great semi-fast casual dining option with a coffee bar and beers on tap. It would earn a 5-star rating except the furniture is getting a bit old (stained) and on my last two visits the bathrooms were both filthy and without toilet paper or paper towels. I suspect they are only cleaned nightly.
Great food, coffee, service, and vibes. The patio is great for those that have dogs with them. Every dish we have ever had here has been fantastic. The vegetables and ingredients are always fresh, and the preparation is always well done.
This place has a lot going for it. First and foremost, the food is excellent. It boasts a bright, open, and inviting atmosphere, complemented by consistently friendly staff. Parking is usually easy, and the outdoor seating is a nice touch. However, the one glaring issue is the efficiency of service. Upon entering, you're immediately greeted by a long line—often exceeding the number of seated guests—which stems from a highly inefficient ordering process. Customers pile up at the front door, waiting in line for over 20 minutes just to place their orders, and then another 20 minutes for their food. This wasteful system is the biggest drawback and discourages repeat visits. To the owners: you’ve done a fantastic job overall, but the ordering process must be overhauled. Implement QR codes on tables so patrons can easily scan and order from their phones. Eliminating the front-door line—especially during winter—will transform this from a good place into a great one. Fix this, and this place will truly be five stars across the board.
I forget about this place but I’m definitely adding them into my rotation. Breakfast was delicious - everything fresh. My favorite was the delicious matcha latte. It was a work of art and delicious.
