Crema's Take

Union Rec is a vibrant Ann Arbor hangout that brilliantly blends serious coffee craft with an ambitious kitchen spanning Southern BBQ, TexMex, and Asian-inspired dishes, creating a refreshingly unpredictable spot that somehow pulls it all off. The bar seating and attentive staff create an electric energy—especially before big Michigan games—while the wheelchair-accessible space welcomes everyone from laptop warriors to client meetings to families seeking a full breakfast experience. Reviewers consistently rave about the care that goes into both the drinks and the welcoming vibe, making it feel less like a typical coffee shop and more like a genuinely cool gathering spot.

Literally everything was amazing! We sat at the bar and Morgan was our bartender. They were absolutely slammed before the Michigan/Michigan state basketball game and the service felt like we were the only ones there. We will be back! Also, food was amazing. Highly recommend the pollo asado taco and the honcho hot taco. We got the Mac n cheese to go because she said it’s what they’re known for and it is SO flavorful!

Such a cool place! I’m from out of town, didn’t know what I was walking in to, & was pleasantly blown away. Nice place. Cool staff! Perfect vibe.

Yesterday, I decided to go to Union Rec with coworkers and a client after seeing how the food was displayed on TikTok. Upon entering, I noticed the location is wheelchair accessible, and the staff kindly helped open the doors for the wheelchair. We placed to-go orders and just waited by the front door. When I paid for my food in cash, the waitress asked if I needed change, and I told her that I did. When she returned, I noticed my full change was not given back, so I asked where the rest of it was. She looked at me but didn’t respond and instead continued processing the credit card payments for the rest of the group. After she finished their transactions, I asked again about my change. Typically, I tip well, but since she chose to keep my change without asking and ignored my question, I told the front door host to let her know that the change she kept would be her tip. I’m not sure if it was a math error or her not knowing how to count, but it was disappointing. We eventually got our food and went back to the client’s house. We were all surprised that the tacos didn’t automatically come with any type of sauce on the side. Overall, the food was just okay and not as flavorful as expected. Also the small cup they give of the Mac n cheese was half full. They are pricey for the amount of food you get.

Union Rec is interesting because it feels like they almost have too much going on. The menu is a mix of southern BBQ, TexMex, and Asian. This isn’t necessarily bad and it can be nice to have options, however, it can also feel slightly chaotic. I ordered the Sesame Chicken Rice Bowl from the specials menu and it was good! Honestly was very pleasantly surprised so that was good! The portion size is fair but for the price doesn’t quite feel worth it. It was rather pricey for the food you get but not awful. Overall, Union Rec was fine. Not a must go but not bad by any means!

Recommend! Very nice spot for lunch. We love trying out places while visiting in Ann Arbor and came across Union Rec. Everyone was very welcoming and attentive. The food was delicious, especially my new favorite the jalapeño sweet mash, there is something for everyone on the menu too all styles of food. The atmosphere was very welcoming and comfortable.
