Tacoma Coffee: The City Seattle Keeps Underestimating
6th Ave, Old Town, and downtown, where the coffee got good without anyone announcing it
5 min read · August 2026 · By Gabe Petersen
The Quick Shot
Tacoma's coffee runs along 6th Avenue, where Bluebeard and Valhalla both roast, and out to Old Town where Curran opens at 6am with water views. Campfire roasts over Pacific Northwest wood and Common Ground anchors Hilltop. The best small rooms are downtown: Civic Roasters holds a perfect 5.0, The Method operates inside a skate shop, and Naomi Joe pulls espresso inside a brewery. Crema tracks 86 independent shops in Tacoma, chains excluded.
Tacoma spent thirty years being the punchline of a joke about a paper mill smell that no longer exists. In that time it quietly built a coffee scene that does not need Seattle's approval and mostly does not seem to want it. The geography helps: 6th Avenue is a genuine commercial spine with two serious roasters on it, downtown has enough density to support small rooms that would not survive in a suburb, and Old Town sits on the water with a view of the Sound that costs a third of what the same view costs in Seattle. What you notice most is the format experimentation. Coffee inside a skateboard shop, coffee inside a brewery, coffee roasted over local wood. None of it feels like a gimmick because the espresso underneath it is good. Come with a car, because the neighborhoods are real neighborhoods and they are not walkable to each other.
Local Grounds
6th Avenue
Tacoma's main commercial strip west of downtown. Two roasters, bars, and record stores. If you only have one morning, spend it here.
Downtown & the Theater District
Pacific Avenue, Broadway, and the numbered streets. Museums, the university campus, and the highest concentration of small, interesting rooms in the city.
Old Town & the North End
North 30th Street above the water. Brick buildings, Sound views, and the earliest opening hours in Tacoma.
Hilltop
Up the hill south of downtown. Historically Tacoma's Black neighborhood, now the site of most of the city's argument about what change should look like. Good coffee in the middle of it.
Stadium District & Market Street
Between downtown and the North End, wrapped around Stadium High School. Walkable, dense, and where a lot of the newer places have opened.
Worth the Grind
Barista’s Notes
- 016th Avenue has Bluebeard and Valhalla about a mile apart. Do both in one morning and you have covered Tacoma's roasting scene in under an hour of walking.
- 02Almost nothing downtown is open Sunday. Civic Roasters closes Sunday and Monday, The Method closes Sunday, Third Space closes both weekend days, and Beware closes Monday and Tuesday. Weekend mornings belong to 6th Ave and Old Town.
- 03If you need coffee before 7am, Curran in Old Town opens at 6 and is the only reliable option. Plan around it.
- 04Downtown parking is metered but cheap and street parking on 6th Ave is free. This is not Seattle. Drive between neighborhoods rather than trying to walk them.
- 05Third Space on Pacific Avenue makes breakfast sandwiches on laminated biscuits that are closer to croissants. Weekdays only, and it is worth restructuring a morning around.
