Crema's Take
“Anthology Coffee roasts with genuine craft and precision, earning its reputation as one of Detroit's finest and a serious contender nationally for third-wave excellence. The converted space with garage doors opening onto Eastern Market creates an irresistibly cozy atmosphere that draws everyone from serious coffee enthusiasts to creative twenty-somethings, all expertly served by staff who care as much about the coffee as you do. Whether you're pulling up a chair for hours with your laptop or stopping by to grab whole beans, the combination of impeccable espresso, thoughtful pour overs, and that welcoming neighborhood vibe makes this a genuinely special spot.”

Very cool place, love the vibe. Great coffee, beyond the level of most others. Interesting clientele, staff with great personalities. Free parking across the street, close to Eastern Market. Large open interior. Just check it out!
My favorite coffee roaster in the entire metropolitan Detroit area, and I believe they are one of the best coffee roasters in the US. They genuinely care about the craft of roasting and the art of coffee. I love the espresso drink ordering system they have (espresso + different sizes of milk or oat milk). I usually order 8oz for there and drip to go. They typically offer two drip options, both of which are of exceptionally high-quality, single-origin coffee. Recently, they have had some fermented or anaerobic options, and they do it just right. Sometimes, fermented beans can be too funky for me, but when roasted just right (not too light), they are light, yet without glassy flavors. Pastries are also fruity and excellent. Pear upside-down and almond pies are always fantastic. I loved their old location near Michigan Central, but their new location in the East Market is even better and more beautiful
I recently moved to Detroit, Lafayette Park, and was looking for a local coffee roastery to buy whole beans. When I arrived at Anthology Coffee there was a gaggle of 20-somethings milling about in front of the counter. Apparently some nearby group was doing an orientation, and Anthology Coffee was the meeting place. After wading through clusters of folks, asking half a dozen people if they were waiting to order coffee (they weren't waiting to order coffee), I had a chance to ask the Anthology staff about my bean preferences. "Most of our roasts are on the lighter side, but the Parainema is a bit bolder." I ordered a brewed cup of their Villa Sarchi with oat milk. Note: In addition to being a roastery, Anthology staff make their house oat milk from locally sourced oats. And their delicious looking, gluten free, baked goods are also made from scratch in-house. The Villa Sarchi was a quality cup of coffee, but wasn't a taste I prefer. I then bought a 300g/10.5oz bag of the darker roasted Parainema for $21. More costly than most locally roasted whole bean coffees, and I am hopeful this may be my new favorite coffee. 🤞🏻
This was my first visit, and the delicious aroma from outside drew me in. The space felt cozy and toasty, with an open-air vibe thanks to the wide glass garage doors letting in plenty of fresh air. The environment was inviting and had a lot of charm. However, I was disappointed by the lingering smell of cigarette smoke in the atmosphere—even though no one appeared to be smoking and ventilation was ample. The coffee was also darker than I prefer; even with extra cream and sugar, it remained strong and a bit too bitter for my taste. That said, it has great potential, especially for those who enjoy a bolder brew and a laid-back, open setting.
When researching coffee spots in Detroit (as I do not live in the area), Anthology consistently came up as one of the best, particularly in terms of “third-wave” coffee. Didn’t disappoint! The espresso shot was delicious, and I had a good conversation with the barista who pointed me to some good beans to take with me for at-home pour overs. Also, they have a beautiful, spacious interior! If I lived in the area, I would come to work here all the time. Bring a hotspot, though, as there is no Wi-Fi.
